The FAIRR Initiative is a collaborative investor network of 250+ institutional investors with around $15tn in combined assets that has been engaging global food companies across the supply chain on a range of ESG issues since 2015.

FAIRR’s annual Protein Producer Index assesses 60 of the world’s largest meat, dairy and fish farming companies on material environmental, social and governance issues.

The report aims to provide investors with insight into the risk and opportunities associated with the livestock farming industy.

In 2021, the Index showed:

  • 50% of meat and fish companies in the Index were categorised as ‘high risk’ based on their scores against eight ESG risk factors. The high risk businesses include major suppliers to McDonalds and KFC.
  • Deforestation & Biodiversity, Water Use & Scarcity, and Waste & Pollution were the worst-performing factors.
  • 62% of companies are categorised as ‘high risk’ on antibiotics stewardship - meaning little or no measures were in place to reduce overuse of antibiotics, creating a potential risk to human health.
