Learning out loud

We believe in working transparently and modelling what it looks like to learn, unlearn and do better. This “Learning out loud” page does not cover the entirety of our Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) work, however, it shares some of what we are learning and exploring, and where we are making changes. If you have expertise in this area please get in touch, as we are always open to learning new ways of approaching this work.

Where we started

  • We undertook our first internal training with Collaborative Future, which gave us a broad introduction to issues of equity, power and inclusion in 2023
  • On the back of this training, we have re-evaluated and amended our recruitment process and job adverts
  • We have begun to embed inclusive communication principles into our internal and external communications, including using accessibility tools, alt text, captions and subtitles and inclusive stock photography. We will be adding to and extending these through a brand review we are currently undertaking.
  • We have invited content from people and organisations from a broader range of backgrounds and with different lived experience in our campaigns
  • In 2023 we launched our Nourishing Justice workstream which promotes the consistent use of a food and racial justice lens by actors within our movement, in order to help achieve an equitable transition and tackle systemic inequalities.
  • Since 2024 we have continued our internal training working with New Ways.

What we are learning

  • Deepening our understanding of structural inequities that exist in the food and farming system
  • Exploring and defining how systems of oppression show up in our work
  • Breaking through discomfort as a team and naming it as part of our growth
  • Identifying our team’s internal blocks to JEDI ways of working and how this impacts our culture and decisions
  • Committed to being more active allies to our colleagues (internal and external)
  • Examining how our meetings and events can be more inclusive, increasing participation and accessibility for all members and partners

Changes we are making

Internally

  • Shifting our focus more explicitly toward impact, including how our internal culture and practices advance JEDI
  • Each team member has an accountability buddy to support and hold one another accountable in this work
  • Creating more dedicated time for regular discussion, reflection, and learning around JEDI
  • Working with an external facilitator to hold us collectively accountable and act as a critical friend
  • We have developed a set of language principles and we are working towards embedding them more intentionally into how we write, communicate, and articulate ourselves online. The brand review we are currently undertaking in 2026 will support further embedding of JEDI principles in our external comms and comms strategy.

Externally

  • Continuing working in close collaboration with Alliance members to advance JEDI in our collective work, starting with amending our membership terms to clearly set an expectation that members should ‘commit to working in a just, equitable and inclusive way in the alliance and actively demonstrate a

commitment to embedding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in their work’

  • Focusing on how systems of oppression impact the food system, including trialling a project that brings food equity and class analysis into our “less and better” agenda
  • Leading a JEDI‑focused leadership programme for senior leaders within our alliance member organisations, with the participation of our Executive Director, to support the strengthening of sector‑wide practice and peer learning for leaders in this area

What we still need to improve

We are honest about where we fall short. For example:

  • As an organisation made up of a small staff team and Board, we are all on a JEDI journey, and individuals are at different points on that journey, so we need to actively continue to engage collectively with JEDI plans, to support one another’s learning and confidence to act
  • Our membership lacks diversity, particularly when it comes to organisations rooted in social justice and doing on‑the‑ground food systems work. We are working intentionally to connect with groups and organisations that align with our mission, and to shift who is at our table.
  • We currently do not have dedicated funding to support internal JEDI training, which remains an ongoing challenge.

We are committed to naming gaps, tracking our progress and holding ourselves publicly accountable in this work. This page will be regularly updated (at least twice a year).
