Disrupt to transform: Alternative approaches to movement building

Reports | Published  5 December 2025

The sustainable food, farming and land sector is working towards equity but is shaped by inequitable systems. As a broad movement, we share goals yet differ in priorities and approaches to change. Sustain and Eating Better have a responsibility to help the movement progress together. Introducing Disrupt to transform: Alternative approaches to movement building.

This resource is short, easy to read and it is designed to help us pause and rethink how we gather, convene and co-create change. Developed with Sustain and Eating Better, it recognises that while our goals are shared, our priorities and lived experiences differ - sometimes sharply. Rather than smoothing those edges, this resource invites us to treat them as generative.

This is a resource for the doing part of movement building. It offers an accessible introduction to alternative approaches rooted in justice and equity, with links to further learning and prompts to support intentional event planning. Introducing terms such as decoloniality, the resource offers ways to shift how we hold space: slowing extractive habits, noticing who takes up room, welcoming complexity without collapsing into chaos. You’ll find practical suggestions for events, collaborative processes and tools that centre accountability, curiosity and connection.

Included is also a case study sharing the co-creation process and delivery of the 2025 Gathering Table Summit hosted by Eating Better, Sustain and AFN Network+.

This resource is an invitation, not to perfect the movement, but to disrupt it just enough that something more honest, grounded and transformative can grow.

This document lays the groundwork for future collaboration. It outlines what inclusive movement building can look like and showcases inspiring projects and actions from across the sector. The focus is on external efforts to promote social justice in food systems, rather than on internal Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) or anti-racism work. It aims to inspire organisations to take meaningful steps towards system change.
